The 'Global Policy' international law course kicked off last month

The ‘Global Policy’ international law course, jointly conducted by the law faculties of the University of Haifa, Ottawa, and Bocconi-Milan, kicked off in Ottawa, Canada, last month. Attended by approximately thirty undergraduate and graduate students hailing from various corners of the globe, the course boasted a diverse cohort, including participants from Israel, Canada, Italy, China, Germany, Singapore, France, and beyond. In addition to engaging lectures on law and technology delivered by the program’s three esteemed lecturers, the students were treated to a rich array of activities. These included a visit to the Canadian Senate, where they had the privilege of meeting with five senators, observing a parliamentary debate as guests in the gallery, and engaging in discussions with Senator Leo Housakos on various topics. Further enriching their experience, the students toured the Canadian Supreme Court and were graciously hosted by Justice Sheila. They also had the opportunity to glean insights from former Canadian Justice Minister David Lametti regarding his initiatives pertaining to innovation and technology. The course’s Canadian segment concluded with a reception commemorating the tenth anniversary of the international program, hosted by the Canadian branch of Friends of the University of Haifa Association. The course then ventured into its second week in New York. Activities included visits to the New York branches of law firms Pearl Cohen and Desmarais LLP, as well as McKinsey’s consultancy. These visits offered firsthand exposure to the workings of these companies in the relevant fields of law, technology, and compliance, highlighting significant initiatives. Additionally, students attended lectures by the head of the FoodTech accelerator at the United Nations, gaining insights into work involving emerging technologies. They explored the uses of Artificial Intelligence in the fields of trademarks and licenses with the head of the leading North American industry lobbying organization. The group also toured the Jewish Museum in Manhattan and engaged with leading academics in the realms of ethics and technology.
